Imagine a stack of index cards...

Each card can have unique contents and the contents of one card do not affect the contents of another and adding a card to a stack does not make a card disappear.

PowerPoint slides are very similar to index cards...

Each card has its unique contents and adding another slide does not make an existing slide disappear.

Because we see only one slide at a time (when we use Normal View), however, some find it disconcerting that a new slide will take the screen space held by the previous slide.

Rest assured that (assuming you save frequently) slides do not disappear... use the scroll bar or the Outline Pane to navigate between your slides.
