Taconic-Learning  :: Graduate Courses & Institutes  ::  Capstone
In each summer from 1999 until 2002, the Rutland Region Education Alliance, a consortium of school districts in southwestern Vermont, sponsored annual Capstone Institutes.  These weeklong 3-graduate credit courses for educators focused attention on creating student-centered classrooms using the four models as described in the RREA Manual for Practitioners.

Capstone Components:

The primary purpose of the Capstone Institute was to assist educators as they planned and implemented projects and practices aligned with the four Capstone Components:

Personal Development Collections
Personal Performance Projects
Community Service Learning
Work-Based Learning

Many of the materials developed for the Capstone have been used to develop other areas in this web site; visit those areas with the links above.

Institute History:

Funding for Capstone Institutes came from a School-to-Work grant. Those funds were supplemented with funds from the Southwest Region of the Vermont Information Technology Association for the Advancement of Learning. In 2002, VITA-Learn was the only source of funding for the institute.

Since 2001, Adelphia (the communications company) has been providing financial and technical support to the RREA's Capstone Initiative. Much of that support has focused on program recognizing outstanding Capstone practitioners.

In the winter of 2003-2004, there are no plans for offering Capstone Institutes in the future. Those who were on the institute faculty have a standing offer to interested schools or organizations to prepare and present professional development experiences based on Capstone practices. The potential for providing support for both experienced and new Capstone practitioners through distance learning methods.
